Grassa
sustainability concept

Grassa brings together various parties through its sustainability concept to jointly address challenges in the agricultural sector. By using the existing acreage of grass more efficiently and opening it up, more is earned in the entire chain and it becomes more sustainable.

Grass, the overlooked hero

Like spinach and other leafy greens, grass is naturally rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The only reason it hasn’t made it to our plates yet is purely practical: its nutrients have always been locked inside fibres that humans and most animals simply can’t break down.

Grassa’s processing technology changes that. By unlocking what’s already inside the plant, we can extract high-quality, food-grade ingredients from grass and, for the first time, make that natural goodness available to humans, as well as monogastric animals like cats and dogs.

By allowing grass to become a multi-purpose crop within existing agricultural systems, Grassa creates new, high-quality ingredient solutions without putting extra pressure on land or ecosystems.

Fewer emissions

Opened grass contains less unstable protein, allowing cows to utilize nutrients more efficiently while maintaining the same level of milk. With fewer excess nutrients entering the system, emissions are reduced.

Lower unstable protein also reduces the cow’s energy requirement resulting in less methane formation in the rumen.

More food from the same land

Grassa wants to ensure that the nutrient-rich and widely cultivated grass crop is handled more efficiently. The extraction of grass protein and FOS from existing grasslands ensures that up to 2.5x more food is produced than in the current situation. While ruminants always had a monopoly on the use of grass, monogastrics such as humans, dogs and pigs can suddenly also obtain nutrition from the grass. And all this while still producing the same amount of milk and meat, with less waste.

Local and circular

By sourcing protein from grass grown on local dairy farms, farmers can also become producers of plant-based food. Our process system extracts protein from grass for food applications for both humans and animals, while returning the remaining fibre to dairy cows. This circular approach helps reduce reliance on imported protein sources such as soy by creating locally produced protein from existing grassland.

Climate positive

The Grassa system compensates the CO₂ emissions associated with grass production and processing through improved nutrient efficiency and additional food production from the same biomass.

Better soil and biodiversity

Grasslands keep the soil covered year-round, supporting healthy ecosystems while improving soil structure and organic matter storage. Grass captures as much CO₂ as deciduous forests, making it one of the most effective crops for carbon capture. The inclusion of herbs and clovers in grasslands further enhances biodiversity without affecting the protein that can be extracted from them. Because of these benefits, grass is also widely used as a rest crop in arable rotations, helping restore soil health between intensive crops such as sugar beet, potatoes,and flower bulbs.

Impact

A Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of the Grassa process was developed in collaboration with Blonk and compared to traditional land use, our concept delivers a net positive environmental impact.

The efficiency gains from the Grassa process already compensate for the emissions associated with grass cultivation and processing.

In addition, grass naturally captures and stores CO₂ during growth. When these reductions are allocated to dairy production, they can contribute to nearly CO₂-neutral milk production.

Grassa’s mission and vision align closely with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By unlocking more value from grass and supporting farmers in producing both food and income, Grassa contributes to a more efficient and sustainable food system.

SDG 2 - Zero Hunger

By enabling more food production from existing agricultural land, Grassa helps improve access to affordable and nutritious protein while supporting resilient farming practices.

In countries with more food scarcity, efficiency and using local resources are crucial. That is why Grassa is participating in the BIO4Africa project. In this project, Grassa technology is used to contribute to improved food security for Africa.
